Presentation Title: High-Value Products From Microalgae Biomass

Abstract
Algae are photoautotrophic and heteroautotrophic organisms that exist as red algae (Rhodophyta), brown algae (Rhaeophyta), and green algae (Chlorophyta) that can be further classified as macroalgae (seaweeds) and microalgae, according to their cell sizes. Macroalgae are large-sized algae, multicellular, and are visible to the naked eye, while microalgae are single-cell organisms. They can be easily found growing in a wide range of aquatic habitats, e.g., freshwater (lakes, rivers), saltwater (oceans), brackish water (mangrove swamps), and wastewater. Microalgae are photosynthetic autotrophic that are commonly cultivated for their various benefits, e.g., high lipid, vitamins, and bioactive compounds contents, making them excellent candidates for various product developments. These organisms could make renewable and sustainable raw materials for microalgae-derived products that are available worldwide in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, cosmetics, animal feed, fertilizer, and biofuel. These versatile organisms are also applied in wastewater treatment and carbon dioxide sequestration. Considering the enormous biodiversity of microalgae and recent developments in genetic and metabolic engineering, various efforts are being attempted by researchers towards making microalgal commodities sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective.
