B1 Preliminary – is an English exam for students with intermediate proficiency. It evaluates reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Level: CEFR B1 (Intermediate User).
Overview: At this stage, learners can deal with most situations in daily life, from travel to work or school contexts. They can write personal correspondence, take notes, and communicate effectively in familiar environments.
Versions:
- B1 Preliminary (Adults)
- B1 Preliminary for Schools (Younger Learners)
Both versions share the same format but have age-appropriate topics.
Skills Assessed:
- Reading & Writing: Reading factual texts, short stories, and simple articles. Writing letters, emails, and short compositions.
- Listening: Understanding announcements, conversations, and everyday spoken English.
- Speaking: Interview-style conversation, role-plays, and discussion tasks with a partner.
Outcome: A B1 qualification demonstrates readiness to move into more complex English situations, and it’s a stepping stone to B2 First.
